A Dynamic Approach to Children’s Orthodontics

Young girls with early orthodonticsThe early bird catches the worm, they say. In the case of interceptive orthodontics, early intervention helps address serious occlusion and spacing problems before they interfere with your child’s oral health. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first visit with an orthodontist around age 7. This allows your family orthodontist to fully assess the development of your child’s jaw and teeth and, if necessary, recommend an aggressive treatment plan to help improve the function and appearance of their oral structures. This early approach is often called “phased orthodontics” and today, we’re taking a closer look at what you can expect from each phase of treatment. (more…)

Dr. Cabal Helps Teens Choose Orthodontic Appliances

At Lake Country Orthodontics, we understand the unique changes and challenges that teens face. When we were growing up, there were limited options for straightening and aligning teeth. Today’s orthodontic appliances are better-suited to teenagers who desire a discrete way to achieve a straighter, more attractive smile. For appealing orthodontics in Fort Worth, consider these popular options from Dr. Ciro Cabal. Teeth-colored brackets

Colored Brackets Blend With Teens’ Teeth

Classic wire braces continue to be a popular option for children and teens whose teeth require significant straightening. Until recently, metal brackets were available only in silver. These brackets served their purpose, but they were very conspicuous, making many teens reluctant to wear them. Your Fort Worth orthodontist, Dr. Ciro Cabal, now gives children, teens, and adults the option to wear tooth-colored brackets. These smooth brackets are more discrete than their metallic predecessors, so the wearer feels less self-conscious. We find that the tooth-colored version works equally well as other options. As an added bonus, our patients note that these brackets are less prone to causing irritating their sensitive mouths and gum tissue.

Clear Is Cool: Invisalign Invisible Braces

Invisalign straighteners eliminate bulky hardware in favor of clear, plastic liners that can be discretely worn and removed. Clear braces apply gentle, firm pressure to coax teeth into the desired position. Our teen-aged patients can appreciate the ease of enhancing their smile without calling attention to themselves. As an added bonus, invisible braces do not interfere with your teen’s oral hygiene regimen. With no wires to work around, patients find brushing and flossing easy as ever. As a result, they are less likely to experience gum irritation or cavities during the straightening process. This option also appeals to teens who are active in athletic programs at school. Football, track, volleyball, and soccer become more enjoyable when your teen isn’t distracted by stray wires and rough edges.

How Crooked Teeth Lead to TMJ Disorder

worried guy in thoughtAs an orthodontist in Ft. Worth, Dr. Ciro Cabal spends most of his time helping patients correct crooked teeth for more appealing, and better functioning, smiles. As he warns his patients, malocclusion can have dire consequences for your teeth, as well as the jaw that moves them. Teeth should erupt vertically (up and down) to comfortably meet the teeth on the opposite dental ridge when your jaw closes. When teeth erupt at an angle, or if the jawbone is congenitally crooked or asymmetrical, then your mouth can’t open and close as smoothly as it should. The imbalance is a common contributing factor to TMJ disorder, a dysfunction of your jaw’s joints, and realigning your teeth through orthodontic treatment may be the only way to relieve your jaw’s discomfort.

What is TMJ Disorder?

TMJ disorder describes a problem with your jaw’s temporomandibular joints, or TMJs. Located below and in front of each ear, your TMJs connect your mandible to the temporal bones in your skull. Along with the muscles that surround them, your TMJs are responsible for your jaw’s movement. When your bite is imbalanced, your TMJs may have to strain to keep it straight, and the undue pressure can damage the joints and lead to debilitating discomfort. Aside from jaw pain, TMJ disorder can also result in severe, chronic headaches, recurring earaches, tinnitus (ringing in one or both ears), and pain in your neck, shoulders, and back.

Crooked Teeth and Bite Balance

When perfectly aligned, your teeth can evenly distribute the pressure of your bite amongst themselves, minimizing the force that each tooth must bear. Malocclusion, or crooked teeth, can disturb this balance, placing some teeth under more pressure than they can withstand. Teeth can become excessively worn and may develop cracks and fractures from the pressure, in addition to damaged and painful jaw joints. By straightening crooked teeth, Dr. Cabal can help restore a proper balance to your bite, preventing extensive damage and allowing your TMJs to heal.
