When you have damage to your orthodontics, or if your braces or aligners are causing major discomfort, then you should let us know. These emergency issues could impact your treatment progress and cause problems down the road. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about how to handle these emergency treatments.
What are some common orthodontic emergencies you should be aware of? Essentially, any discomfort or damage that impacts or threatens to reverse your treatment progress. Such as missing or loose brackets or bands, damaged aligners, headgear that fits improperly, or persistent discomfort that doesn’t ease. Temporary discomfort as the braces are adjusted or a new aligner set is worn is common, and usually last for a very short period. But pain that persists for more than day is cause for concern!
Easing Your Discomfort
You should call us right away and we will schedule a time to see you or your child quickly to offer relief or repair, or to replace certain orthodontics. In the meantime, steps can be taken to ease discomfort. For a loose wire or one causing pain, use the eraser end of a pencil to push it down and away from the gums and cheeks. Then coat it in wax. If a bracket is loose, wax can help keep it in place. If one falls out, place it and any bands in a sealed container and bring it with you to the office. If an aligner is damaged, wax can again be used to prevent pain.
Protecting Your Smile
Our team can see if you need an aligner set replaced, or if you’re ready to simply move on to the next set in the series. We can restore missing or loose bands and brackets, and remove portions of wires that cause pain. We will make sure your headgear is being worn properly, and if so, we can make adjustments to help it fit better. We want you to enjoy a comfortable treatment experience, and one that is effective at correcting your uneven smile.
If you have any questions about our approach to orthodontic emergency care, or if you or a member of your family is simply ready to try orthodontics to correct uneven teeth, then give us a call to schedule a visit soon! We look forward to straightening your smile.
