Choosing Your Orthodontic Treatment

fort worth custom orthodonticsOrthodontic treatment helps straighten your uneven smiles, improving the health, function, and the appearance of your smile. In fact, we offer this treatment for people of all ages, from kid and teens to adults and scenarios. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about how we help choose the right treatment for you.

For Kids

For children, we offer a phased approach to orthodontics. This means we choose options to help guide the growth of the smile and limit misalignment severity until their teens and ready for braces or aligners. These phased orthodontics will be custom-made and fitted to their smiles to offer a comfortable fit and treatment with precision and accuracy. For many, we could use fixed or removable retainers to guide the smile. For kids with baby teeth lost prematurely, we can use teeth spaces to ensure the permanent teeth can erupt properly, limiting the risk for severe malocclusion as they grow.

For Teens

We start treatment for teens once all of the permanent teeth have erupted and properly calcified. We then look at the extent of their misalignment to choose the most appropriate option. For severe cases, we will usually recommend metal braces. But to make them less visible, we could apply ceramic brackets instead of metal ones. The ceramic ones are color matched to blend with the smile and offer a natural appearance. For minor cases, we could use Invisalign® aligners, which are clear and comfortable, and also nearly invisible when worn. These are also removable, making eating and brushing/flossing much simpler during treatment.

For Adults

For adults, we could again offer metal braces and use ceramic brackets to make them less visible. Many also apply for Invisalign® aligners, which shift the teeth into proper position in as little as one year. If they’ve undergone treatment in the past and the teeth have since shifted, we could also look at retainers. For adults with TMJ disorder, we also have special appliances that help reposition the jaw to ease strain and pressure.
