When you have an uneven smile, this could mean treatment is necessary to avoid a host of major complications with oral health, beauty, and smile function. In order to treat misalignment with a cosmetic approach, our team may recommend a series of clear aligners. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about Invisalign®.
The Need to Correct Misalignment
When we have crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth, this could cause serious trouble for the smile. The uneven nature of your smile could provide places for food particles to become trapped, where bacteria could consume them and cause plaque buildup. Soon, the risk of cavities and even gum disease is elevated. For others, misalignment could upset bite balance and strain jaw joints, so the risk of complications like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding) are more likely. You could also simply feel uncomfortable with the appearance of your smile. For better quality of life and improved oral health, you may need orthodontic treatment!
Starting the Treatment Process
To start the Invisalign® process, we will first examine your smile to identify the cause and assess the extent of misalignment. If clear are right for you, we need to father detailed digital images from multiple angles of your smile, which we do with iTero®. We them combine these images to create a 3D model of your smile, one that allows the aligners to be created with precision and accuracy. When the aligners are ready, treatment begins. Each set is made from a BPA-free plastic material. They will fit comfortably to prevent discomfort in the gums and cheek, and to offer care with precision and accuracy.
Addressing Poor Alignment
Each day, a set is worn for about 20 to 22 hours, depending on your orthodontist’s exact recommendations. They will be worn for two weeks, at which point you start wearing the next set in the series. The process continues like this for about a year to 18 months on average, and can help teen and adult smiles alike. They can also be removed above emails, or before you brush and floss, which makes your day-to-day routine much simpler.
