With metal braces, we use brackets and wires to address dental misalignment. These are fixed to the teeth and not removable. But with the Invisalign® system, we use clear aligners that can be removed without impacting treatment! In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about removable aligners.
How Do We Create Aligners?
Invisalign® is popular with teens and adults because they don’t need metal brackets and wires at all. Instead, they will wear a set of aligners to gently shift the teeth into proper position and offer a straighter smile. Each set is custom-made for your smile. To do so, we will take detailed digital images of your smile from multiple angles. We then combine these images to create a 3D computer impression, one far more accurate than a physical one. Using this, the aligners are created in a lab setting. A set is worn 20 to 22 hours daily, for about two weeks. At which point you begin wearing the next in the series. For some, this could offer optimal results in as little as one year for some.
When can They Be Removed?
With metal braces, food particles could become trapped, which increases the risk of tooth decay, gingivitis, and even gum disease. But with Invisalign®, you simply remove your orthodontics before you eat, and replace them after the meal, which prevents particles from being trapped in your teeth. For added protection, you could excuse yourself to floss before placing them back in. You can also take them out before you brush and floss. Since you don’t have to work around metal brackets and wires, this means a more thorough job, lowering the risk of oral health issues and stained teeth during treatment. Finally, as long as you’re wearing them for the amount of time the orthodontist recommends, you can take them out before special occasions, such as first dates, graduations, or important meetings.
