Tips For Addressing Common Orthodontic Emergencies

fort worth orthodontic emergency careAn orthodontic emergency is essentially anything that compromises your braces, aligners, appliances, or headgear, and causes discomfort. These issues should not be ignored, as they could impact your treatment progress. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about our approach to emergency care.

Loose Wires, Brackets, and Bands

If you have a wire that is loose and causing discomfort, then use the eraser end of a pencil to gently push it down and then away from your gums and cheeks. You can place wax over it for further protection until you can see us for repair. If a band or bracket is loose, you can use wax to keep it in place. If they fall out completely, save them in a sealed container and bring them with you to the office. Remember, with a loose band or bracket, there is a chance this is halting your treatment progress, so see us right away.

Lose Appliances and Headgears

If you have an oral appliance or an aligner that is cracked or chipped, you can use wax to help them stay in place without injuring your gums. But you need to see us right away so we can replace it, or possibly move you to the next aligner in the series. If your headgear is causing you persistent pain, then let us know. We will make sure it is properly fitted for you, and that you’re wearing it properly. When you receive new orthodontics or have adjustments made, a little discomfort initially is normal. But if pain persists for more than a day, let us know.

Soreness

As we mentioned above, when wearing braces or aligners for the first time, or when you’ve had them adjusted or moved onto the next set in the series, this could cause a little pain when you bite down for the first few hours. You can rinse with warm saltwater and take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease discomfort until your smile adjusts. But if this doesn’t happen, then you should contact our team to schedule an appointment. If you have any questions about not only addressing orthodontic emergencies, but about our cosmetic treatment options, retainers, or TMJ appliances, then contact our team today to learn more. We want to help you on your journey toward an even and healthy smile.
