Ready to finally address your uneven smile and enjoy better oral health? If so, then this summer could be when you or a member of your family could start Invisalign® treatment with clear plastic aligners. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about what to expect from this process, and the benefits for your oral health.
Assessing Your Candidacy
First, we want to find out if this option is right for you. To do so, our team will take detailed digital images with digital x-rays and CBCT imaging. This allows us to identify the position of your teeth, and understand the severity of misalignment. We also learn what factors led to your uneven smile. We can then decide which course of action is best, and for many teens and adults, this could mean Invisalign® aligners are the right choice for your smile correction.
Designing Your New Orthodontics
Once we approve of the aligners, we will need to make digital impressions with the iTero® system. Using a miniscule digital camera at the end of a very thin wand, we take a series of pictures from multiple angles of the smile. We then combine these images to create a 3D computer model, so the orthodontics can be crafted and custom-made for your smile in a lab setting. When they’re ready you can begin treatment! The algins will not only fit comfortably, but they avoid the gum and cheek irritation often caused by metal orthodontics.
The Invisalign® System
You start the Invisalign process by wearing a set of aligners for about 20 to 23 hours a day, depending on our recommendation. After two weeks, you move on to the next set of the series and repeat the process until you have optimal results. For most adults, results take about a year to achieve, while teens may need around 18 months as their smiles are still growing and changing. The exact time will depend on the cause and extent of your misalignment, and whether you wear the aligners as we prescribed. You can also remove your orthodontics before meals, and prior to brushing and flossing, which helps make your daily treatment experience a simple one.
