When you have a teenager with misalignment, this could impact your child’s confidence, and also lead to poor oral health down the road. To offer care that doesn’t impact their appearance as much as braces will, we could discuss Invisalign®. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about helping teens with clear aligners.
Correcting Misalignment for Teenagers
As your children approach adulthood, we want them to start this exciting new stage of life with an even smile, one that makes them feel confident. But along with esthetics, a straighter smile could be less susceptible to tooth decay, gum disease, and jaw joint disorders like TMD or bruxism (chronic teeth grinding), so they enjoy better oral health too. If your children received interpretive orthodontics such as retainers or teeth spacers, this is the final stage of treatment. But even if they haven’t received phased orthodontics, we can often help with a series of clear aligners.
The Invisalign® System
We begin by taking detailed digital images of the smile and using these images to create a 3D computer model, one far more accurate and precise than physical impressions. We use the impression to craft a series of aligners from a BPA-free plastic material, one that is completely clear in appearance. Once the aligners are ready, your teen will wear a set for 20 to 22 hours a day over a period of about two weeks. Afterward, they move on to the next set in the series, gradually and gently correcting their smile. Depending on how severe the misalignment is, this could take between a year and 18 months, which is shorter than the time frame required for braces.
The orthodontics are not fixed in place, and can be removed before you sit down and eat. This means there is no need to avoid sticky or chewy foods, or alter your diet at all. You also have a much easier time caring for your smile, as brushing and flossing thoroughly is much simpler too. Other benefits include fewer office visits and the ability to take out your orthodontics for special occasions, such as a graduation.
