When your child reaches the teen years, this means they’re ready for smile correction with braces or aligners. We can offer cosmetic treatment with each of these options, so kids can enjoy less visible orthodontics. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about orthodontic care for teens.
The Initial Exam
To get started, we will schedule an initial consultation. We want to talk to your teen about his or her smile, and then examine their smiles with advanced imaging technology, such as digital x-rays and intraoral cameras. This enables us to assess the cause and extent of their misalignment. From there, we can decide on the best course of treatment. Every smile is different, and we always take a personalized approach to treatment. Correcting misalignment will help improve the esthetics of the smile, but can also lower the risk of common complications related to poor alignment, such as tooth decay, gingivitis and gum disease, TMJ disorder, and even bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). A stronger and healthier smile is possible with orthodontic care.
Braces with Tooth-Colored Brackets
For more substantial cases of misalignment, we may recommend braces. This involves attaching a bracket to the front facing side of each tooth, and then connecting a portion of an arch wire to them with bands. We then adjust the tension in the arch wire to begin moving the teeth into optimal positions. However, we may know few teenagers are excited by the prospect of braces. Which is why to make them less visible, we use ceramics to create the brackets instead of metal. Ceramic means we can shade them to blend with the smile and offer a more lifelike appearance.
Clear Invisalign® Aligners
For many teenagers, we can offer treatment with the Invisalign® system. This means we don’t need metal braces or retainers at all. Instead, we create a set of plastic trays based on detailed digital impressions taken of the smile. These trays will fit snugly over the teeth and be nearly invisible in appearance. They then help shift the teeth over a period of a year to 18 months, and offer invisible smile correction. They can also be removed before your child eats or prior to brushing and flossing, which makes mealtime and daily dental hygiene much simpler.
