Creating Custom Orthodontics With iTero®

fort worth orthodonticsEvery single smile is unique, and will need a personalized touch to obtain optimal smile correction., Which is why when starting treatment with braces or aligners, or with retainers and phased orthodontics, our team will employ digital imaging technology. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about the iTero® system.

Physical Impressions

In the past, orthodontists would have to take physical impressions of your bite. This meant filling a metal tray with a sticky material. There would be a number of flavors, but they would always taste like chalk. The patient would bite down and hold their bite for several minutes. Often, the process had to be repeated to get a viable impression. This was an awkward and frustrating process of all parties involved. Fortunately, our office has been using the digital alternative for years!

The iTero® Alternative

With iTero®, a tiny digital camera at the end of a thin wand is used to take multiple pictures from several different angles. We then combine these to create a detailed 3D computer impression. This one is far more accurate and precise, and much easier to create. This replaces the need for physical ones, and allows us to design the appliances and devices that treat a variety of oral health issues, including malocclusion!

Custom Orthodontics and Appliances

We could use them to create ceramic brackets instead of metal ones, so people receiving braces have an option that is much less visible. We can also create Invisalign® aligners, which are nearly invisible when worn and help correct misalignment in as little as a year. They can be removed before meals too! For kids, we can create custom retainers and teeth spacers to begin guiding smiles and limiting misalignment severity. We can even help people with TMJ disorder too! This disorder occurs when the jaw joints are stressed, and could lead to painful complications and symptoms. But with a custom or appliance, we have a comfortable and convenient method of correcting this disorder and offering relief.

If you have any questions about how we treat misalignment or about how we use digital technology as part of the process, then contact our team today to learn more. We want to help people of all ages enjoy even and healthy smiles, and relief from common disorders like TMD.
