Treating Your Orthodontic Emergency Situations

fort worth emergency orthodonticsAn orthodontic emergency is simply any damage to your braces or aligners, or discomfort caused by them. These could impact your treatment progress and in extreme cases, cause minor injuries. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about treating common orthodontic emergency situations.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies and Their Impacts

When you have an orthodontic emergency, this could cause serious discomfort and, in some cases, actually slow your treatment progress, keeping you from reaching your optimal results in the original timeframe you discussed with our team. Examples include loose wires or brackets, damaged braces, cracked or chipped aligners, poor-fitting headgear, and issues with retainers or teeth spacers. When these issues arise, give us a call right away. Even if the problem happens outside of normal business hours, we will be in contact to set up a time to see you quickly, restoring the issue and protecting your smile.

Easing Your Discomfort

If you have a loose wire that causes discomfort, use the eraser end of a pencil to push the wire down and away from the gums or cheeks. You can coat them in wax for additional protection. If a bracket is loose, then wax can keep it in place, and if one comes off completely, put it and any bands in a container and bring them with you to the office. If your braces are causing discomfort, and the same goes for your aligners, you can use wax to provide a comfortable protective layer between the gums/cheeks and the wires or brackets.

Protecting Your Smile

We can replace missing or compromised brackets and bands, and remove exposed wires that cause pain. We can make sure your headgear is being worn properly and that it fits well, and if necessary, replace any teeth spacers and retainers. We can also decide if you need a new alignment set, or if you can move on to the next one and continue your treatment. We want to help you enjoy a more even and healthy smile with quality smile correction, for kids as young as seven, and teens and adults as well!
