Helping Teenagers Correct Uneven Smiles

fort worth teen orthodonticsWe don’t just offer care for kids and adults, but we can help teenagers enjoy even smiles too. Whether we recommend cosmetic tooth-colored braces or Invisalign® aligners, we can help your teen obtain an even and healthier smile. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about treatments for teenage patients.

The Impact of Misalignment on Your Teen

Uneven teeth could provide places for food particles to become trapped, places beyond the reach of your toothbrush. This could increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease, as well as bad breath and teeth stains. The imbalance caused by your child’s uneven smile could lead to increased risks of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). For some, the factors behind misalignment could also limit breathing at night, leaving your teeth more susceptible to sleep apnea as he or she approaches adulthood. Not to mention the impact on smile beauty and self-confidence!

Braces

To prevent the complications listed above and improve the beauty of the smile, treatment is recommended. We will examine your smile to assess the cause and extent of your misalignment, and choose the best treatment option. If we opt for braces, we could offer a more cosmetic option with tooth-colored ceramic brackets. These will be placed onto the front facing sides of each tooth, and shaded to blend with the smile. We will attach a portion of an arch wire to them with clear bands. His limits visibility as we use the braces to shift the teeth to proper position, treating more advanced cases in about two years. Although, for some we could limit the treatment time with Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics.

Invisalign® Aligners

By far the most popular option for our teen patients, this involves using a series of clear plastic aligners instead of metal orthodontics to shift the teeth. Each set fits comfortably and is custom-made for the smile, offering treatment with precision. The total treatment time takes about a year to 18 months, and they can even be removed before you eat or brush and floss your teeth. If you have any questions about which one could be right for your teen, then contact our team or schedule a consultation soon. We would love to help you and your children enjoy strong and healthy smiles that look great using cosmetic orthodontic treatment options.
