When you suddenly find yourself with broken aligners or damaged braces, then you may need to seek treatment. Otherwise, this could slow your treatment progress. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about how we treat common orthodontic emergencies and help you continue your journey to a straighter smile.
Don’t Slow Your Treatment
When you have damaged braces, poor fitting headgear or appliances, or a cracked or broken aligner, you should let us know right away. Lack of action could slow your treatment, or even cause you to lose progress. Don’t put your progress back, continue your journey toward an even and healthy smile by talking to our team. Even if your orthodontic emergency occurs outside of normal business hours, give us a call and we will set up a time to help you.
Addressing Initial Discomfort
After you contact our team and arrange for an appointment, you can take steps to ease your initial discomfort and prevent injury to your teeth or gums. For example, if a wire is causing discomfort, use the eraser end of a pencil to push the wire down and away from your gums and cheeks. You can then coat it in wax. If an aligner is damaged or causing discomfort to your gums or cheeks, then place wax over these portions until we can see you. If a band or bracket is loose, wax could help hold it in place. If they come off completely, place them in a sealed container and bring them to the office with you. You can also take over-the-counter pain medications to ease discomfort.
Protecting Your Orthodontics
To help prevent injuries or damage, be sure you always place your aligners in a container to store them when not in use. If you wear braces, then be sure you avoid hard or chewy foods that could become trapped in them, or damage them. Wear a mouthguard when playing sports too, as this limits the risk of injury. Continue to brush and floss each day, and follow any instructions we give for cleaning or maintain your appliances, aligners, and braces. If you have any questions about how we protect smiles from injury, or about addressing issues that may arise, then contact our team today. We look foreword to helping you and your family on your journey toward an even smile.
