You probably don’t associate braces with cosmetics, but we can use tooth-colored brackets instead of metal ones to make your orthodontics less visible! This can be used to help teen and adult smiles, correcting misalignment. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about our cosmetic approach to braces.
How Braces Correct Misalignment
First, let’s talk a little about how braces correct misalignment. Essentially, the orthodontist will attach a bracket to the front facing side of each tooth. A portion of an arch wire is then attached to the brackets with a band. Usually, the bracket is made from metal. During periodic visits to the office, the tension in the wire will be adjusted, which begins to shift the position of the teeth. Over time, this corrects more severe cases of misalignment, offering straighter smiles for teens and adults in about two years. Although with Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics, we could limit the total treatment time!
Creating Tooth-Colored Brackets
For a more cosmetic approach, we don’t use metal for the brackets. Instead, we craft them using ceramic. This is a very strong material, one translucent like tooth enamel. We then color-match it to blend with your tooth. This material is so lifelike that dentists often use it to create crowns and even replacement teeth. To design and craft the bracket, we will use the iTero® digital scanning system to create a 3D computer impression, one that is more accurate than a physical impression. We then attach the wire with a clear band. You now have orthodontics that are much less visible!
Care for Kids, Teens, and Adults
We mentioned teens and adults because these are usually who receive metal braces. But we also offer care for all ages! With phased orthodontics, we can start treating smiles as young as age seven, guiding the growth and development of the smile to limit misalignment in later years. We also have other treatment options, such as Invisalign® aligners, retainers, teeth spacers, and even appliances to help treat issues like TMJ disorder.
