We recently discussed the first phase of treatment we offer for kids in our community. The next stage begins in the teenage years, and often completes the orthodontic process. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about how we treat misalignment in the teen years!
The Benefits in Adulthood
A straighter smile helps a person maintain better oral health. Particles from our foods and drinks are less likely to become stuck between the teeth, and this lowers the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Since brushing and flossing is much easier, the chances of gingivitis and gum disease developing is much lower too. Patients feel more confident about their smiles, and complications due to jaw joint strain and bite imbalance, such as TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding)are less likely too. To accomplish this, we recommend addressing misalignment as soon as possible!
Braces
If your teen has more severe cases of misalignment, then we opt for braces to correct their uneven teeth. We know that few teens are excited by this prospect, which is why we take a cosmetic approach. Instead of creating the brackets that attach to the teeth from metal, we use ceramic. This material can be shaded to blend with your smile, and make them much less visible. We then attach a thin arch wire with clear bands, so the smile can be corrected with orthodontics that are much less visible.
Invisalign
We also have Invisalign too! With Invisalign, we don’t need brackets or wires at all. Instead, we take detailed digital images with the iTero scanning system and use this to design and craft a series of custom aligners from a clear plastic material. Each set will fit comfortably, and help gradually and gently shift the position of the teeth. A set in the series is worn for about two weeks, 20 to 22 hours per day. They can be removed before meals so your kids don’t have to change their diet or avoid certain foods. The removable aspect also means better oral health, as thorough brushing and flossing is much simpler too.
