We offer care for all ages, and using a number of different orthodontic systems, from retainers and braces to Invisalign aligners. But how do we design and create them, and what technology will we employ as part of the process? In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about the iTero digital scanning system.
The Initial Consultation
We offer care for kids starting as young as age seven, and we also correct misalignment and treat issues like TMJ disorder for teens and adults. Everything starts with an initial consultation. During this visit, we will take a close look at your smile to assess the cause and extent of your alignment issues. From there, we will create a treatment plan tailored to your unique smile, helping you enjoy even teeth and relief from orofacial pain. Treatment often involves orthodontics or oral appliances, and we will custom-make them for your smile with an advanced imaging system.
The iTero System
The iTero system uses a tiny digital camera at the end of a thin wand, which we use to gather a series of detailed images of your teeth from multiple angles. We then combine them to create a 3D model of your smile, one that allows us to design and craft your treatment options with precision and accuracy. Compare this process to physical impressions, which involved biting down on a mold filled with a sticky and poor-tasting material. You would have to hold the bite for several minutes, and often needed to redo the process to obtain one clear enough to use. Instead, we’ve opt for a more simple, comfortable, and accurate alternative using the iTero system.
Treatment for All Ages
We could use this system to create retainers for children, and to choose where to place teeth spacers as well. For teens and adults, this could be used to craft tooth-colored ceramic brackets that blend with the smile, to Invisalign aligners that offer a comfortable and nearly-invisible solution to misalignment. If you have TMJ disorder, we could use this system to create an oral appliance that corrects the position of the jaw to ease discomfort, treating not only TMJ disorder, but often bruxism (teeth grinding) as well.
