If you have an uneven smile, this could impact the health and beauty of your smile. While many people want to enjoy an even smile, they may be hesitant to try braces. But to make this decision easier, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about our cosmetic approach with tooth-colored brackets.
The Benefits of an Even Smile
When we have crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth, this could lead to poor oral health, in addition to a less attractive smile. For example, uneven teeth make thorough brushing and flossing difficult, and could allow food particles to stay trapped between the teeth. This increases the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The strain on your jaw due to bite imbalance caused by misalignment could also increase the risks of serious complications like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding). By addressing your uneven smile, you help improve your overall health and prevent major complications from arising.
Cosmetic Braces
Braces are a very effective means of correcting misalignment, but they’re also very obvious in appearance. Then involve attaching metal brackets to the front of each tooth, and then connecting a portion of an arch wire to them with a band. We then adjust tension in the wire during periodic visits, correcting the alignment of the smile in about two years on average.
But to make them less visible, we don’t use metal for brackets. Instead, we craft them from ceramic. This material is very strong, but also translucent like enamel and metal-free. We then shade it to blend with the surrounding tooth structure, so your brackets are nearly invisible. Dentists actually use this material for their crowns and replacement teeth for this same reason! We then use a clear band to further limit the appearance of your orthodontics.
Creating Ceramic Brackets
How do we craft these lifelike, custom brackets? To begin, we take detailed images of your teeth with iTero, a digital scanning system. A tiny digital camera at the end of a thin wand is used to gather images from multiple angles in a fast and comfortable manner. We then combine them to create a detailed 3D computer model of your smile. We use this same system to aid in the creation of Invisalign aligners and our TMJ appliances.
