When you have an injury that damages your orthodontics, or if they cause discomfort or don’t fit well, these are examples of emergency situations. You need to see us right away so we can offer repair or correction. Otherwise, you risk slowing your treatment progress, or losing what progress you’ve gained. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about treating orthodontic emergencies.
Damaged Braces
If you have a loose or lost bracket or wire, or if your orthodontics are causing discomfort, then always let us know. Your treatment shouldn’t be a source of pain, and damage or injuries to your braces could interrupt your treatment progress. In the meantime, you can help ease discomfort until we can see you. If there is a wire causing discomfort, use the eraser end of a pencil to push the wire down and away from the sensitive tissues. You can then coat it in wax as well. If there is a loose bracket, you can help hold it in place with wax as well. Any pieces that come off completely should be placed in a sealed container and brought into the office with you! Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever is recommended as well.
Cracked Aligners
If your current set of aligners becomes cracked or broken, let us know. If you’re nearing the end of your two-week mark of wearing it, then we may suggest moving forward with the next set in your series. If you’ve just started your two-week period, we could help replace the current one and allow you to continue your treatment.
Headgear Issues
Headgear may initially feel a little uncomfortable, but prolonged discomfort is a sign that something isn’t right. Let us know so we can make sure the device is being worn properly or if necessary, make any changes to it to ensure a better fit.
