Could Invisalign® Correct Smiles For Teenagers?

fort worth teen invisalignInvisalign®, the clear aligners we use to correct misalignment, could help more than just our adult patients. For teenagers, these could provide a solution for misalignment and remain practically invisible the entire time. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will discuss how we help address uneven smiles.

The Invisalign® Treatment Process

Essentially, we will take detailed images with the iTero® system, which we use to design and craft a series of custom aligners in a lab setting. Each set is clear, and will contain a small dot that will wear away if the aligners are being worn properly. A set is worn for 20 to 22 hours per day, being removed only for meals, brushing and flossing, or for special occasions. After two weeks, you upgrade to the next set in the series. The total treatment process could last between a year and 18 months, depending on the extent of the misalignment.

The Dangers of Misalignment

Unless treated, misalignment could allow food particles to become stuck between the teeth, left for bacteria to break down. The result could be a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease! Uneven teeth also strain the jaw joints and upset bite balance, a recipe for TMJ disorder and chronic teeth grinding (bruxism). The risk of bad breath and stained teeth is elevated as well. By correcting smiles, you help your child not only feel more confident when he or she smiles, but you help them enjoy a healthier smile that functions better!

Treatments for Our Older Kid Patients

Invisalign® is a clear and comfortable option to address misalignment for our teen patients. However, if they need braces due to more severe misalignment, we have a cosmetic option! Instead of using metal brackets, we place ceramic ones on the front facing sides of each tooth. Ceramic is not only strong, but can be shaded to blend with the color of the tooth, significantly reducing the appearance of the metal braces. The option we recommend for your older child will depend on the cause and extent of the uneven teeth. If you want to schedule a consultation, then contact our team to learn more.
