What If My Teen Needs Braces?

fort worth teen bracesIn our last blog, we looked at using Invisalign® clear aligners to correct misalignment for teen patients. But what if your child has a more severe case of misalignment, and actually needs braces instead? In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist explains how we still take a cosmetic approach even when we’re using braces!

The Value of a Straighter Smile

Remember, misalignment isn’t just an esthetic issue, although it does have a negative impact on how many people view their smile. Uneven teeth could make proper brushing and flossing difficult and in turn, leading to a greater risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The strain on your smile from poor alignment could also lead to issues like TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding), which cause discomfort and could damage teeth. However, correcting the issue helps your teen enjoy better oral health!

The Process of Correcting Smiles with Braces

We often use braces for more severe cases of misalignment. The process begins with our team taking detailed digital images, which we use to assess the cause and extent of your misalignment. We then plan the treatment with precision and accuracy. Brackets will be placed onto the front-facing side of each tooth. We then connect a portion of an arch wire with a band. The orthodontist will then adjust tension in the wire to begin shifting the teeth into proper position. The oral treatment time could take about two years, however with Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics, we could use a hand-held device to stimulate the growth of bone tissue and significantly reduce the total treatment time.

Tooth-Colored Brackets

To make them less visible, we don’t use metal for the brackets. Instead, we use ceramic. This material is metal-free and can be color-matched to blend with your smile. In fact, dentists use this material to create crown and replacement teeth that look and function like natural ones. We then attach the arch wire to them with a clear band. With the appearance of the braces significantly decreased, your teen may feel more confident during the treatment process.
