If you have a teenager who needs treatment for uneven teeth, braces are not the only option to correct misalignment. In fact, we have a cosmetic and barely noticeable option with Invisalign®. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will explain how we help teen patients enjoy even smiles with our clear and comfortable Invisalign® aligners.
Correcting Misalignment
Why should we correct our uneven teeth? Well, misalignment is linked to bite imbalance and stained jaw joints, major factors behind disorders like TMD and bruxism (teeth grinding), which could cause headaches, jaw pain, and even damaged teeth. Crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth could keep stray food particles out of reach of your toothbrush and floss, making the onset of tooth decay and gum disease more likely. Finally, you could feel uncomfortable with how your smile looks, which impacts your overall quality of life. By addressing uneven teeth, you help avoid these complications and safeguard the health of your child’s smile as he or she approaches adulthood.
Creating Clear Aligners
With the Invisalign® system, we use a series of clear plastic aligners to correct uneven teeth instead of metal braces. To begin, we examine the smile to assess the cause and severity of the misalignment. If clear braces are the right choice, we will take detailed images and impressions of your smile. The information is used to design and craft a series of aligners from a BPA-free plastic material. Each set is barely noticeable. Our teen patients feel more comfortable seeking treatment with this option, as it doesn’t alter their appearance during the treatment period.
Treatment for Our Teen Patients
Your teen will wear a set for 20 to 22 hours a day, over a course of two weeks. At which point, he or she will upgrade to the next set in the series. The total treatment varies, but usually falls between a year and 18 months. Since they’re removable, your kids can take them out before meals, instead of worrying about food becoming caught in braces. Removable aligners also mean an easier time brushing and flossing, so your teen can better care for his or her smile throughout the treatment process. If you have any questions about how we treat misalignment in kids and teens, or if you would like to schedule a consultation to see if Invisalign® is the best choice to correct misalignment, then contact our team today.
