We’ve recently looked at how we treat misalignment in childhood with retainers and teeth spacers. But what about care for teenage patients? In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will explain how we help our young adult patients with either tooth-colored ceramic brackets or clear Invisalign® aligners.
The Causes of Misalignment
Dental misalignment could develop for a number of different reasons. For example, baby teeth that don’t fall out on schedule, or fall out too early due to cavities and other oral health issues could alter how permanent teeth erupt and cause poor alignment. The issue could be linked to the size of the jaw, or the way oral structures have grown and developed. Even thumb sucking or tongue thrusting in childhood could alter how your teeth line up as you approach adulthood.
Dangers of Uneven Smiles
When you have uneven teeth, this makes proper brushing and flossing difficult, a complication that could increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. The factors behind some cases of misalignment could also restrict airflow during sleep, leading to exhaustion, moodiness, and an increased risk of chronic snoring and sleep apnea. The strain on your jaw joints due to uneven smiles could increases the risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism (teeth grinding), two disorders linked to headaches, jaw and facial pain, and even damaged teeth. To avoid these issues, and also offer a more attractive smile, your teen should consider orthodontic treatment.
Tooth-Colored Brackets and Invisalign®
We have two options available, both of which have a cosmetic aspect to make the aligners less visible. With braces, we don’t place metal brackets onto the front facing sides of the teeth. Instead, we use the iTero® system to gather detailed images of your smile and design ceramic brackets that we color-match to blend with your smile. We then connect a thin arch wire to them with clear bands, significantly reducing the visibility of your braces.
We also have Invisalign®. With Invisalign®, we use iTero® images to design and craft a series of aligners that fit comfortably. Each set is worn for two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day. The total course of treatment takes about a year for some, or up to 18 months for others, either way this is less time than braces require. The aligners will be clear and practically invisible when your teen wears them!
