Designing Your Orthodontics With Digital Impressions

fort worth iteroDid you know that our team employs advanced digital technology to create the aligners, appliances, and braces we use to correct misalignment? When we do, we offer improvement with accuracy and precision! In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will explain how we use iTero® digital scanning technology.

The Old School Method

At one time, to design braces, aligners, or oral appliances, we needed to gather actual physical impressions. A metal mold would be filled with a gooey material. The patient would then bite down on this mold and hold that bite for several minutes. While the material could be flavored, it was never pleasant, and people often needed to redo the process to ensure a proper impression. All in all, not ideal! Which is why we’re glad to offer a digital alternative.

A Digital Improvement

With the iTero® option, we will use a digital camera set at the end of a very thing wand to take several pictures, gathering images of your smile from multiple angles. This can be done quickly and comfortably! We then combine the images to create a detailed 3D model of your smile, one far more accurate and precise than the old school physical impressions. The images let us create your appliances and orthodontics in a lab setting, crafting options custom-fitted to your smile for improved treatment!

Creating Appliances and Aligners

We could use the system to create the brackets that we affix to the front facing sides of your teeth if you wear braces. The system lets us design and color match ceramic brackets to ensure your braces are much less visible, and provide a more attractive appearance. For Invisalign®, we can create a series of aligners that fit comfortably and help shift the teeth over time, correcting misalignment while reminding practically invisible. For children, we can create retainers to help guide the growth of the smile and limit misalignment until the teen years, and when braces or aligners can finish the process. If you have TMJ disorder, then we can craft an appliance to wear at night to ease strain on the jaw joints, providing relief from painful TMJ-related headaches and jaw pain.
