What happens when your braces break, or your aligner is cracked? What if you notice discomfort that doesn’t pass after a day? These are common examples of orthodontic emergencies, and unless treated, they could lead to complications that slow your treatment. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about how to respond to dental emergencies.
When your braces become damaged, this could cause injury and discomfort, and also slow the rate of your progress. We want you to take immediate steps to ease discomfort, and then see us as soon a possible. For example, if you have a loose or stray wire, use the eraser end of a pencil to push it down and away for the cheeks and gums. Then coat it in wax. If you have a loose bracket, use wax to keep it in place until we can see you. If it comes off completely, place it in a sealed container and bring it with you. Let us know if aligners or retainers crack or break as well. While some discomfort following adjustments is expected, if your discomfort persists, let us know as well! You can always take an over-the-counter pain reliever following these episodes.
If you have headgear that isn’t fitting properly, or retainers or aligners that continue to cause pain days after use, let us know. First, we will make sure they are being worn as prescribed, and then we will make sure they fit correctly and make any necessary adjustments. After all, poorly fitting orthodontics could mean difficulties for your treatment progress! If your aligners are rubbing on part of your gums and causing discomfort, use wax to act as a barrier until we can see you and offer treatment.
If you have soreness, then rinse with warm salt water and take an over-the-counter pain reliever. You can also use wax to help ease discomfort on certain parts of your smile.
