When you have uneven smile, whether you’re a child, teenager, or an adult, the health of your teeth and gums could suffer. You could also feel self-conscious about your smile’s appearance. To help correct uneven teeth without having a major impact on your appearance during the process, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist may suggest cosmetic orthodontics!
The Causes and Dangers of Your Misalignment
Misalignment means that your teeth are uneven, possibly crooked, crowded, or overlapping one another. This could be caused by the eruption of your wisdom teeth, failure for baby teeth to fall out as they should, or issues with the eruption of your permanent teeth. Injury or premature tooth loss could be a factor, as could issues with the growth and development of your jaw and certain oral structures. Even thumb sucking in childhood could be a potential factor. Unless treated, misalignment could make through brushing and flossing difficult, and also strain your jaw joints and bite balance. The result could be a higher risk of cavities, infection, gingivitis, gum disease, and even the onset of disorders like TMD or bruxism (persistent teeth grinding).
Cosmetic Braces
We start the treatment process by carefully examining your smile with detailed digital scanning systems, so we can see the causes and assess the severity of your alignment issues. From there, we choose the best solution to move forward. Braces may often be recommended for more serious issues, and to make them less visible we use tooth-colored brackets. Made from ceramic, these will be color-matched to blend with your smile and attached to the front facing sides of each tooth. We then connect a portion of a very thin arch wire to them with a clear band. Throughout the treatment process, we adjust tension in the arch wire to begin shifting the teeth, all while your braces remain barely visible. We could even discuss the use of a Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics device to make the treatment time shorter!
Clear Aligners
Our team also has a completely clear and nearly invisible option with Invisalign®. We don’t need brackets or wires at all, instead we take impressions and images with digital technology, using them to create a series of a aligners in a lab setting. A set is worn for two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, and over the course of a year will correct misalignment!
