How Early Can Patients Correct Smiles With Invisalign®?

fort worth invisalignWith the Invisalign® system, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist offers a series of a clear aligners to begin shifting the teeth in proper position, improving your oral health and smile beauty as misalignment is corrected. But how early can someone start treatment with these aligners, and what makes this a nearly invisible solution to poor alignment?

The State of Your Smile

While we often start orthodontic treatment as young as age seven, that doesn’t necessarily mean Invisalign® is right for very young children. At around age seven, there is a mix of primary and permanent teeth, so we can better assess the risk of misalignment and identifying whether treatment is necessary. In these early stages, we will often use teeth spacers or retainers to begin gradually and gently guiding the growth of the smile and altering the position of the teeth. As your child approaches the teenage years, then we may be ready to move on with the Invisalign ® treatment. Treatment in childhood helps limit how long people need to wear aligners and braces, and helps correct issues that could impact the facial structure and airways too.

Care for Teenage Patients

For teenagers, the total treatment time takes about 18 months, as the smile is still growing and changing for a bit.

Improving Adult Smiles Too

In the adult years, the smile is no longer growing and changing, so treatment is often possible in as little as one year!

The Invisalign® Process

How do the aligners help correct your uneven smile? Well, there will be a full series of multiple aligner sets, each one is designed and crafted specifically for your smile. A set is worn for 20 to 22 hours a day. After about two weeks, we move on to the next in the series. Over time, the teeth will be moved into optimal positions, to correct misalignment and improve overall esthetics. For both teens and adults, they can be removed before meals or prior to brushing and flossing, which makes eating and caring for the teeth much easier throughout the process.
