Don’t Ignore Discomfort

fort worth orthodontic emergenciesWhen you undergo treatment with orthodontics, this could start you on the road toward an even and healthy smile. But if your smile begins to hurt, or an injury develops, be sure to let us know right away. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will explain how we approach common orthodontic emergency situations.

Damage and Discomfort

Often, damage to your orthodontics or a poor fit could lead to major discomfort. Along with causing you pain, this could also mean interrupting your treatment process, which prevents you from obtaining optimal results in the original time frame you discussed with your orthodontist. Common examples include a loose or missing bracket, band, or wire. Broken wires could be problematic too, as could headgear that fits poorly or aligners that have become cracked or broken. When these situations arise, please let us know right away. In the meantime, there are steps you can take to ease your discomfort and prevent injury to your gums or the interior of your cheeks.

Addressing Your Discomfort Before Seeing Us

If a bracket or band is loose, then use wax to help hold them in place until we can see you. If they come off completely, then place them in a small sealed container and bring them to the office with you. If a wire is loose or broken and causes discomfort, use the erase rend of a pencil to gently push the wire down and away from any soft tissues. Coating them in wax also helps provide a barrier. If an aligner is damaged or causing discomfort, then again wax is a great way to help prevent further pain. Feel free to take an over-the-counter pain reliever to ease discomfort until you can see us for treatment.
