Using Digital Technology To Create Invisalign® Aligners

fort worth invisalign iteroInvisalign® means correcting minor and complex cases of misalignment with a series of clear aligners instead of metal braces. To ensure a proper fit and treatment with accuracy and precision we employ digital scanning technology to design and craft them. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist explains how we create your custom aligners.

The iTero® System

The iTero® system is a digital scanning technology we use to not only craft custom-made Invisalign® braces, but also retainers, tooth-colored ceramic brackets, and even TMJ appliances to help those suffering from TMJ disorder. The technology enables our team to replace the old method of gathering impressions, which involved biting down on a mold filled with sticky, poor tasting material and holding your bite until we could obtain a detailed enough impression to move forward. Often, the process had to be repeated!

Instead, we now use a tiny digital camera at the end of a thin wand to take a series of detailed pictures quickly and comfortably. We combine these images to create a 3D model, an impression that offers more detail and accuracy than the old method. We send these images to a special lab, where a series of custom-made aligners will be created specifically for your smile!

Wearing Your New Orthodontics

Once the custom-made aligners are ready, you start the treatment process. Basically, a set is worn daily for between 20 and 22 hours. If worn properly, they shift the teeth slightly. After two weeks, a new set is worn to continue the process of moving the teeth. The process repeats for about a year. However, the exact time will depend on the cause and extent of your misalignment, and whether you wear the aligners as we prescribed. Teen patients may need more time as their smiles are still growing and changing, and optimal results could take up to 18 months.

What to Expect Each Day

You wear them for most of the day and night, but will need to take time to soak and clean them. You can remove them prior to each meal, so you don’t need to avoid certain foods or change your diet. You also take them out before you brush and floss your teeth, which improves the process of caring for your smile. As long as you wear them as we prescribed, you can also take them out for special occasions as well. If you have any questions about the Invisalign® process, then contact our team today.
