We often talk about the care we offer for teens and adults, but starting the process of smile correction in early childhood is also very beneficial. With that in mind, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will talk about our approach to children’s orthodontics, and what parents should expect from this treatment process.
When to See Our Team
We suggest an initial exam at around age seven. We recommend this age because at this point, baby teeth are falling out and permanent teeth are erupting. Once we examine the smile with advanced digital technology, we will be able to better gauge the cause of misalignment, and the potential risks to bite balance and aliment should the issue remain untreated. From there, we will create a personalized treatment plan to correct the issue.
The Interceptive Approach
We believe in phased approach, in which we administer different treatments at different ages to begin guiding the smile and limiting the severity of misalignment as your child approaches the teen years. Using digital technology, we can design and craft retainers with accuracy and precision, ensuring a comfortable fit and optimal results. We also have teeth spacers and if necessary, headgear too, all of which helps start your child on the road toward an even and healthy smile.
Treatment in the Teen Years
Once your child reaches the teen years, we begin the final phases of treatment. For more severe cases, we may opt for braces. We attach brackets to the front-facing sides of the teeth and connect an arch wire to each one with a band. As then adjust tension in the wire every few weeks or months to begin shifting the teeth into optimal positions. The process could take between 18 months and 2 years. To limit the visibility of them, we can create the brackets from ceramic, which is shaded to match the color of surrounding tooth structure.
We also have clear aligners with the Invisalign® system. These are clear and comfortable, and will be worn daily to shift the teeth. Your child can remove them before meals or prior to brushing and flossing, and the total treatment time takes as little as 18 months for many teenage patients. If you have any questions about our approach to treatment for kids and teens alike, then contact our team today. We want to help your family enjoy optimal oral health, and beautiful smiles too.
