Did you know that correcting misalignment, whether minor or advanced, could take between 18 months and 2 years on average? While the time commitment is definitely worth it, as even teeth improve overall oral health, we also have technology to shorten the amount of time the process takes. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will talk about Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics.
The Reason Correcting Misalignment Takes Time
We urge people with uneven teeth to seek treatment because misalignment is linked to poor oral health. Uneven teeth make brushing and flossing thoroughly difficult, so the risk of cavities and gum disease increases. Alignment issues could also upset bite balance, leading to issues like teeth grinding or painful TMJ disorder. However, treatment is time consuming because as we shift the teeth with orthodontics, the jawbone and gum tissues need to reform around the new positions of the teeth throughout the process, preventing your smile from reverting to its previous, uneven state.
Our Treatment Options
For children, we help guide their smile growth and reduce misalignment with phased orthodontics like teeth spacers and retainers. For teens and adults, we may suggest braces or aligners. With braces, we attach ceramic brackets that can be tinted to blend with your smile to the front facing sides of your teeth. We then attach an arch wire to each bracket with a band, and adjust tension in the wire to begin shifting the teeth. With Invisalign® aligners, we create a series of them to be worn daily for 20 to 23 hours. Every two weeks, people upgrade to the next in the series to begin shifting the teeth. Braces tend to take two to two-and-a-half years to see optimal results, while aligners could correct the smile in a year to 18 months.
The Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics System
The Propel® Accelerated Orthodontic System involves our team sending patients home with the Propel® VPRO5 device, a small hand-held piece of technology that is easy to clean and store. The device is worn for about five minutes a day, using gentle vibrations to stimulate the growth of the jawbone and gum tissues. Over time, this limits how long treatment lasts. If you have any questions about our approach to treatment, or about any specific procedures, then contact our team today. We want to help you enjoy a better smile in 2021!
