When Can I Take Out My Aligners?

removable invisalign alignerThe most obvious benefit of the Invisalign® system is the fact that your orthodontics will be practically invisible. However, there is another major benefit that is less obvious: they’re removable! But when can you take them out, and how do you make sure you don’t negatively impact your treatment process? In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about when you can take out your aligners.

The Invisalign® Process

How does treatment work? The process starts with a thorough exam using digital technology, so we can assess the severity of your misalignment and decide if aligners are the best choice. If so, we will take digital impressions with iTero® digital scanning technology, replacing the old method of taking impressions. We then deign and create a series of aligners from a clear and BPA-free plastic material. Each set is worn daily for between 20 and 23 hours, depending on your orthodontist’s recommendation. After about two weeks, you will move on to the next in the series. The total length of the treatment time will depend on the cause and extent of your misalignment, and whether you wear the aligners as we prescribe. For teens, optimal results may take about a year, and teens could require treatment for 18 months.

You can take them out before each meal! With metal braces, you have to be careful with hard or sticky foods. They could become trapped in our braces and cling to the teeth, increasing the risk of cavities. They could also potentially damage braces, impacting the treatment process. However, being able to remove your orthodontics means you can eat your favorite foods and snacks. We do suggest rinsing with water, or flossing, before you return your removable appliances to your mouth!

Brushing and Flossing

With metal braces, moving around your wires and brackets when you brush and floss could make through cleaning difficult, leading to a higher risk of teeth stains, cavities, and even gingivitis or gum disease. However, since you simply take these out, keeping your smile clean and healthy during treatment is much easier!

Special Occasions

As long as you wear them as we prescribe, you should be able to remove them for special occasions, too. These could include graduations, first dates, or job interviews. If you have any questions about removable Invisalign® aligners, then contact our team today.
