Metal braces will help address more severe cases of misalignment, helping our patients obtain straighter teeth and improved oral health. However, they also impact the appearance of our teen and adult patients. Fortunately, to address this concern your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist uses ceramic brackets to ensure brace are much less visible!
How Braces Move Your Teeth
How do we use braces to correct misalignment? To start, we attach brackets to the front-facing sides of the teeth, which are usually made from metal. We then attach an arch wire to each one using a band. During regular visits to our office, we will adjust tension in the wire to begin shifting the teeth into new positions. The total treatment time will vary, depending on the cause and extent of the poor alignment. For many, this could take up to two years. However, a straighter smile is worth the wait, as this not only improves smile beauty, but also decreases the risk of common complications, like tooth decay, gum disease, TMJ disorder, and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding).
Crafting Ceramic Brackets
To limit the appearance of the orthodontics, we may not use metal for the brackets. Instead, we will craft them from ceramic. This is a strong and durable material that is often used in crowns and other restorations. Ceramic is also translucent like tooth enamel, and can also be tinted to blend with the appearance of surrounding tooth structure. You then enjoy treatment that doesn’t cause major changes for your overall appearance, and can smile with confidence as we begin the process of correcting crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth.
Limiting Treatment Times
We also have a unique treatment option designed to reduce the amount of time a person needs to wear orthodontics. The reason the process can be time consuming is the fact that the jawbone and gum tissues need to reform around the new position of each individual tooth. To reduce the amount of time this requires, we could prescribe the Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics system. The patient takes a small device home and wears in the mouth for about five minutes. The machine’s gentle vibrations then stimulate the growth of jawbone tissue. The device is easy to use, clean, and store.
