When we provide our patients with retainers and aligners, we want to ensure they offer treatment with precision, and that they also fit comfortably. To help design and create them, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist may suggest using digital technology. In today’s blog, we’re going to look at the benefits of the iTero® digital scanning system.
The iTero® Process
With this system, we use a digital camera at the end of a thin wand to take multiple digital images of your teeth, gums, and oral structures. The process only takes a few minutes to complete and is comfortable. We then combine the images to create a 3D model. This replaces the need to take physical impressions. The old process meant you bit down on a metal mold filled with a sticky material, often repeating the process until you obtained a good impression. The old way was uncomfortable, time consuming, and let’s face it, the impression material never tasted very good. Now, we have the ability to use digital technology!
Creating Invisalign® Aligners
With Invisalign®, we create a series a aligners, made from clear plastic, to begin shifting the teeth into optimal positions, correcting the alignment of the smile. To ensure they fit comfortably and correct the smile with accuracy and precision, we cause the detailed impressions taken with the iTero® system to create the aligners. You avoid the gum and cheek irritation often encountered with metal braces, and enjoy smile correction that is practically invisible.
Treating TMJ Disorder
We also employ the iTero® system to create a TMJ appliance. TMJ disorder occurs when the jaw joints undergo excessive strain, which places pressure on the smile and increases the risk of problems opening and closing the mouth. The disorder also leads to uncomfortable symptoms, like headaches, migraines, jaw pain, and more. However, the appliance we craft will be worn as you sleep and fit comfortably like a custom mouthguard. The appliance then repositions the jaw to ease strain on the joints and provide relief for both TMJ disorder and even bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). If you have any questions about treating misalignment or TMJ issues, then contact our team today. We’re ready to help patients of all ages using advanced digital technology, and custom treatment options.
