When you have a serious case of misalignment, your overall oral health and beauty could suffer. Fortunately, orthodontics offer methods for correcting crooked, crowded, and overlapping teeth. However, these systems also require a major time commitment. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about how we help shorten treatment times with Accelerated Orthodontic technology.
Repositioning Dental Misalignment
What treatments will we offer our patients? For our teen and adult patients in need of smile correction, we often opt for braces or aligners. With metal braces, we correct minor and severe misalignment, but to help limit the appearance of the braces, we often place ceramic brackets onto the front-facing teeth, so the only visible metal is the very thin arch wire. Total treatment time varies, but usually takes about two years. We also create Invisalign® aligners, which involve wearing a set for two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day, over a period of about a year to see straighter smiles, or up to 18 months for teen patients.
The Propel® Accelerated Orthodontic System
The reason the process is so slow us because we not only move the teeth, but we need to wait for the gum and jawbone tissues to reform around the new position of the teeth, as this is what keeps them in place and prevents your smile from reverting to a previous, uneven state. With the Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics system, we help reduce the process. We send you home with a small device that is held in the mouth for about five minutes a day. The machine uses gentle vibrations to encourage the growth of gum and jawbone tissue. The machine is easy to use, clean, and store, providing a convenient means of correcting smiles in shorter time periods.
Starting Treatment in Childhood
Another option for reducing the amount of time you need to wear braces or aligners, is simply starting treatment at a younger age. For patients as young as age seven, we may recommend phased orthodontics. Using custom retainers, aligners, or teeth spacers, we help guide the growth and development of the smile to limit the severity of misalignment, lowering how long treatment will be needed in the teen and adult years.
