Having a loose band or bracket, or a cracked orthodontic aligner, is more than just a minor inconvenience. Unless treated, these common orthodontic emergencies could mean major complications for the correction of your misalignment, and a source of discomfort. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist talks about how we treat emergency situations.
Damaged Braces
When you have a loose or lost bracket or band, this brings your treatment progress to a halt, and could also cause discomfort. A loose wire is also problematic and a potential source of discomfort. When these issues occur, call us to schedule a visit. In the meantime, you can take steps to alleviate discomfort. For example, push the exposed wire down and away from the gums and cheek with the eraser end of a pencil. You also coat them in wax to ease pain. If a band or bracket is loose, use wax to hold it in place. If a brand or bracket falls out, place it in a container and bring it with you to the office.
Poor Fitting Appliances
If you have headgear or other appliances that cause discomfort, let us know. We will make sure they fit properly and that you’re wearing them as instructed. Then, we can make any adjustments as needed. We want to make sure you enjoy a comfortable treatment experience!
Something Stuck in Your Braces?
If you have a bit of food caught in your braces, and you can’t remove it with a toothbrush or floss, the let us know! We can remove them gently, preventing these trapped bits of food from causing cavities and other complications. Don’t try to use anything other than floss or a toothbrush to dislodge them, as you risk damage to your braces, or even your gums or teeth!
Broken Aligners
If an Invisalign® aligner is damaged, let us know. Even a minor crack or chip could impact how the aligner repositions your teeth, and slows your treatment. You could also develop discomfort when upgrading to the next in the series. Let us know so we can replace it and make sure your teeth are being corrected properly.
