What Makes Them Invisible?
Instead of using metal brackets and wires to shift the teeth, we use aligners. The aligners are thin and custom-made to fit comfortably over the teeth. We create them from a clear BPA-free acrylic material, which means they’re practically invisible when worn. For this reason, they’re very popular with our teen and adult patients, who desire a straighter smile but worry about the impact of metal braces on their overall appearance.
Designing Them With Digital Technology
Creating them means employing advanced digital scanning technology. With the iTero® system, we use a tiny digital camera at the end of a thin wand to take a series of detailed images. We combine these images to create a 3D model, which replaces the need to create traditional impressions. No more biting down on molds filled with sticky material! With these images and the 3D impression, we can design and craft the aligners with precision and accuracy.
The Treatment Process
The first set is worn for between 20 and 22 hours a day, depending on the orthodontist’s recommendations. After two weeks, the patient upgrades to the next set in the series and the process continues for about a year for adults and up to 18 months for teens. Each set shifts the teeth more and more as you approach an even smile. The aligners can be removed occasionally, such as before meals, so you don’t need to alter your diet or avoid certain foods. Taking them out before brushing and flossing is recommended too, which makes the process of keeping your teeth healthy much simpler during the treatment period. As long as you wear them as recommended, you may remove them for special occasions, such as dates, job interviews, or other special events.
