On average, treatment for misalignment could take between one year and up to two, or possibly more. However, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist is employing advanced technologies to help improve the process of correcting misalignment. One of these systems, the Propel® system, is actually designed to limit how long treatment takes for our teen and adult patients!
The Importance of an Even Smile
We often recommend treatment for children, teens, and adults to help improve their overall health, and in the process, boost the beauty of their smiles. Misalignment isn’t just a cosmetic issue, as uneven teeth could actually allow food particles to remain trapped between teeth, even if you brush and floss. This elevates the risk of issues like tooth decay and even gum disease! For others, the pressure on the jaw joints and bite balance could mean painful TMJ disorder or bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). By addressing your misalignment, you obtain a smile you can feel proud show the world, and help protect your overall oral health in the process.
Braces and Aligners
For teens and adults, orthodontic treatment often includes braces or aligners. With braces, we attach a bracket to the front facing sides of the teeth. Sometimes, we make them from metal, but other times we create them using a lifelike ceramic. We then attach an arch wire to them with a band, and adjust tension in the wire to reposition the teeth. With aligners, we take detailed digital impressions of your smile, which helps us design a series of plastic aligners, which then move the teeth and remain practically invisible during the process.
The Propel® Accelerated System
For braces, patients on average need around two years to see optimal results. Clear aligners may need at least a year, and up to 18 months, to see optimal results. With Propel®, we lower the amount of time needed for these procedures. At home, the patients will wear a small device in their mouth, which they bite down on. The device emits gentle vibrations to stimulate the growth of jawbone tissues around the repositioned teeth. This helps lower the amount of time needed to see optimal results, as the jawbone is reforming much quicker than it would normally.
