Are You A Candidate For Invisalign®?

an invisalign candidateIf you have misalignment, there are a number of possible treatment options available. For kids, we may suggest teeth spacers and retainers, while adults may receive metal orthodontics. But what about a nearly invisible alternative? In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist looks at the benefits of correcting poor alignment with the clear Invisalign® system.

The Invisalign® System

Invisalign doesn’t need brackets or wires to move the teeth into more optimal positions. Instead, patients will wear a set of aligners, one in a series, for about 20 to 22 hours per day. After about two weeks, the next in the series will be worn as the aligners begin to shift the teeth and correct both minor and more serious cases of dental misalignment. The aligners themselves will be created using detailed digital images gathered of the smile, which we combine to create a 3D model. The model enables our team to design and craft the series of aligners, ensuring a perfect fit and successful treatment process.

Are You a Candidate?

We typically recommend this option for teens and adults. The orthodontist will first perform a detailed exam of your smile employing digital technology, which enables us to gain a better understanding of the causes of your misalignment, as well as the severity. Very severe causes may benefit from metal braces (but we do use tooth-colored brackets to make them less visible). However, we can often correct most cases using the aligners. A number of actors will be taken into account before we prescribe Invisalign®.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

The amount of time treatment takes will depend on the cause and extent of your misalignment. Your ability to wear them as prescribed also factors, as forgetting to wear them daily or taking them out too often could slow the treatment process and minimize results. For teens, the total process usually takes about 18 months, as their mouths are still growing and developing. Adults usually see optimal results in about a year. If you would like to see if you’re a good candidate for this treatment option, then please contact our team to schedule a visit.
