In our last blog, we talked about an alternative to braces in the form of clear Invisalign® aligners. But what if your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist decides that braces are still the best option for correcting your misalignment? To still offer our patients a cosmetic treatment option, we may use tooth-colored brackets created from ceramic!
When Do We Need Braces?
Brace are often an excellent choice for addressing more severe cases of misalignment in teens and adults. Treatment involves first applying a bracket to the front-facing side of the teeth. We then connect an arch wire to these brackets with bands. During periodic visits to the orthodontist, we adjust the tension in the arch wire, which begins repositioning the teeth to correct misalignment. We may also send you home with a small Propel® Accelerated Orthodontics device, which helps stimulate the growth of jawbone tissue, allowing it to reform around the new tooth positions and reduce the amount of time needed for treatment.
Creating Your Tooth-Colored Brackets
Few people are very excited about braces, and we understand. Typically, they’re very visible and have a major impact on your appearance. However, instead of using metal to create the brackets we mentioned above, we could craft them ceramic, a tooth-colored material we can shade to match the rest of your smile. Using iTero® digital scanning, we design and create these brackets. We want you to obtain your best possible smile, but to also love your smile during the treatment process.
Keeping Your Smile Healthy
We have a few tips for protecting your smile while you’re at home. First, try to avoid chewy foods that could become trapped in your braces. When food particles remain trapped, bacteria break them down and increase the risk of issues like tooth decay and gum disease. Be sure you brush and floss daily! You will need to brush and floss around your braces, which can be a bit time consuming, but this extra effort helps prevent unsightly teeth stains from forming, and lowers the risks of common oral health issues, such as the decay and gum disease we mentioned before.
