Orthodontic Care For Kids

We often focus on the treatments we offer for teens and adults, such as Invisalign® aligners or tooth-colored ceramic brackets. But did you know that your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist also provides treatment for children too? In today’s blog, we’re looking at how we treat misalignment in little smiles and help kids start their journey toward optimal oral health.

Why Do Children Need Orthodontic Care?

Dental misalignment often begins in early childhood, which is usually related to the eruption of the teeth, the size of the jaw, thumb sucking, or other issues related to genetics or bad habits. As your little one grows, the poor alignment could become more pronounced and begin to impact overall oral health. For example, crooked, overlapping, and crowded teeth could create places for food particles to become lodged. When brushing and flossing fail to remove them and allow bacteria to break them down, this could cause tooth decay and gum disease due to the result of worsening plaque buildup. For others, poor alignment could put pressure on the jaw joints and bite balance, boosting the risk of painful disorders like TMD and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding), which could damage the teeth in some cases. Still others could be more susceptible to sleep apnea in adulthood, as poor alignment could be connected to issues with airways and obstruction.

Phased Treatment

Phased, or interceptive, orthodontics, are designed to help reduce the severity of misalignment and begin guiding teeth gently into place. Starting this process early helps limit the amount of time kids will need to wear braces or aligners in their teen and adult years. To reduce the severity of occlusal problems, we may suggest teeth spacers, retainers, or aligners, all created based on detailed impressions we gather of their smiles using digital scanning technology. Some younger children may need braces as well.

Care in the Teen Years

Treatment in childhood means the ability to obtain less extensive treatments in teen years. For some, we may use clear Invisalign® aligners to begin correcting the position of the teeth. If your child does need braces, we can create the brackets from ceramic, which can be shaded to match the color of surrounding teeth and reduce the visibly of the braces. If you have any questions about correcting misalignment or about the benefits of a phased approach in childhood, then contact our team today.
