Using iTero® To Create Orthodontics

Even though we’re currently limiting treatments to emergency situations, we still want to let our Fort Worth, TX, residents know about the technology and treatments we offer smiles both young and old. When we can open our doors again, we would love to help you achieve a more even smile using advanced technology, such as the iTero® system.

Digital Scanning Technology

At one time, designing orthodontics or appliances meant we needed to take physical impressions of your smile. We would fill a metal mold with a sticky material and have a patient bite down, holding the bite for several minutes while the material set. Often, we had to repeat the process to obtain a perfect impression. Despite having flavors, the material never tasted good and people didn’t enjoy the experience. Fortunately, we now have a digital alternative! No more molds or sticky materials. Instead, we use a digital camera at the end of a very thin wand to gather a series of images of your smile. This process only takes a few seconds! We then combine the images to create a 3D model, which allows us to design orthodontics with precision and accuracy!

We often use the iTero® system to design the clear aligners used in the Invisalign® treatment process. Patients don’t need braces, instead we create a series of aligners from a clear plastic material. Each set is worn for about two weeks, 20 to 22 hours a day. The patient upgrades to the next set and in as little as a year in some cases, obtains a more even smile. If you do need to wear braces, the iTero® system enables our team to create your brackets from ceramic instead of metal, which mean they blend with the color of your teeth and limit the visibility of metal braces!

TMJ Appliances

We also use digital scanning technology to create appliances, like the kind that treat TMJ disorder. An issue linked to jaw joint strain, TMJ disorder could cause headaches, migraines, jaw pain, popping or clicking in the jaw, and difficulty opening and closing your mouth. However, with a custom-made device that looks and functions like a mouthguard, we can help ease strain and reduce the painful symptoms of TMD! If you have any questions about using digital scanning technology to design systems that improve the alignment of your smile, then contact our team today.
