We’re currently closed in order to help protect our community from the spread of COVID-19. However, we’re still providing emergency treatment for our Fort Worth, TX, patients. But what is an orthodontic emergency, and when should you contact our office for treatment? What can be done to ease discomfort from home?
Issues with Braces
If you have a wire that is loose, use a pencil eraser to push it down and away from the cheeks and gums, or adjust it using a pair of tweezers. You can cover it in wax until we can see you. If you have a bracket or band become loose, then use a piece of wax to try and hold it in place until we can see you. If it falls out completely, wrap it in tissue and out in a small container before bringing it to the office with you.
Loose or Broken Appliances
If an aligner isn’t fitting properly or is loose, this could wear on the gums and cause discomfort. Coat these areas with wax and contact our team to see if you need a new set to address your discomfort. If your aligner becomes cracked or broken, again let us know, as this could essentially halt the progress of your treatment and will need to be addressed quickly.
If we’ve prescribed headgear, then it needs to be worn daily for the amount of time the orthodontist recommends. The gear also needs to be worn properly. We will walk you through the instructions to ensure you’ve been wearing the headgear as prescribed. If so, the we can schedule an appointment to make adjustments and ease discomfort.
After receiving an adjustment or wearing a new set of aligners, you may feel some initial discomfort. This passes after a few hours. To ease the pain during this adjustment period, we suggest rinsing your mouth with warm salt water and taking an over-the-counter pain reliever. You can use wax to help ease the discomfort as well. If the pain continues and doesn’t abate, then please let us know so we can schedule an appointment and see if you need changes made to your orthodontics. If you have any questions about our approach to orthodontic emergency care, then please contact our team today. We want to make sure you remain comfortable and healthy until we can see you again for regular adjustments and visits.
