Are My Kids Ready For Orthodontic Treatment?

At the moment, we’re only offering treatment for orthodontic emergencies. But when we can open our doors again, we will be ready to help people in Fort Worth, TX, enjoy even and healthy smiles again. In today’s blog, we’re going to look at how we correct poor alignment for kids, and why addressing crooked or crowded teeth could be beneficial in the teen and adult years!

The Long-Term Risks Associated with Misalignment

When our teeth crowd, overlap, or sit crooked in our smiles, this not only impacts esthetics, but could lead to issues for oral health as well. First, misalignment often makes thorough brushing and flossing difficult, which allows food to become trapped between the teeth. Bacteria then breaks the bits of food down and leads to a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease. As children grow older, the pressure on the jaw joints from poor alignment could increase the chances of TMJ disorder and bruxism, two disorders linked to higher risks of headaches and migraines, jaw pain, and even damaged teeth. The appearance of the smile could also have an impact on overall confidence levels as well!

Interceptive Orthodontics

The sooner we can see your child and start the treatment the process, the less amount of time orthodontic care will be necessary in the teen and adult years. For young children, we may use interceptive orthodontics, also known as phased orthodontics, which begins adjusting the alignment of the teeth, guiding others in place, and correcting issues with bite balance. This reduces the severity of misalignment as kids grow. We may use a retainer, teeth spacers, or aligners, each custom-made used advanced digital technology to ensure a comfortable fit and treatment with precision and accuracy.

Treatment in the Teen Years

As your children enter their teen years, we upgrade for retainers and teeth spacers to braces and/or aligners. For braces, we will attach ceramic brackets to the front facing sides of the teeth. We then connect an arch wire to the brackets via bands, and adjust tension in the wire to reposition the teeth. The ceramic brackets blend with the teeth and reduces the visibility of the braces. With aligners, we create a series of clear plastic aligners that fit over the teeth. These offer practically invisible smile correction! If you have any questions, then contact our team today.
