Have you ever heard of cosmetic orthodontics? These refer to treatments designed to correct your misalignment, while also taking your appearance into account. In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will look at two unique options, one that uses clear plastic aligners, and another that employs ceramic brackets to reduce the visibility of braces.
The Importance of Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic treatment corrects your uneven teeth, offering a boost to both the health and beauty of your smile. When we have crooked, crowded, or overlapping teeth, this makes routine brushing and flossing difficult, allowing tooth decay and gum disease to develop. Others may experience poor bite balance or pressure on the jaw joints, leading to a greater risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism, two jaw joint disorders linked to everything from headaches to damaged teeth. Correcting your smile helps you avoid these issues. For children, we have interceptive orthodontics to start the process, such a retainers or teeth spacers. For teens and adults however, we have cosmetic procedures!
One of our more popular options, and one that costs as much as braces, we have Invisalign® aligners. We don’t use metal brackets and wires to reposition your teeth. Instead, using digital technology, we design and craft a series of clear aligners that you wear like mouthguards. They’re barely visible and can be removed before meals or special occasions. Over a period of about a year, they can help you obtain a more even and attractive smile. This option is great for both teens and adults!
For more severe cases of misalignment, braces may still be the best option. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t take steps to limit their appearance. Treatment involves placing metal brackets onto the front-facing sides of the teeth and connecting them with an arch wire. We then adjust tension in the wire to begin repositioning the teeth. However, instead of metal, we can use ceramic to create the brackets. Not only is ceramic durable, but the material can be shaded to match the color of the teeth. Meaning your braces now blend with your smile and are much less visible.
To see which of these options is right for you, be sure you schedule a visit. During your consultation, we will carefully examine your smile with an advanced technology to assess the cause and extent of your misalignment. From there, we can choose the optimal treatment to correct alignment and help you enjoy your best possible smile.
