When should you schedule a visit with your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist for emergency treatment? In today’s blog, we’re looking at what you can do in response to common orthodontic emergencies, such as loose bands or braces. In today’s blog, find out when you should see us and learn more about the dangers of not treating damaged braces or aligners.
Damaged Braces
If a band or bracket becomes loose but is still attached to your orthodontics, then use a bit of wax to help hold them in place until you can see us. If a wire is loose and causing discomfort, use the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire away from your lips and gums. You can also coat the area in wax for added protection. If a band or bracket comes loose completely, then wrap them in tissue and place them in a small sealed container and bring them to the orifice with you. Remember, loose or lost bands and brackets, or broken or loose wires, bring your treatment to a halt and can cause dental damage and discomfort. Be sure to see us right away!
Broken Aligners
Acrylic aligners, such as those used in the Invisalign® system, are durable and able to help correct minor and advanced cases of misalignment. However, should they become cracked or broken, you should let us know right away. Damaged aligners can no longer hold your teeth in their current position or help move them, so seeing us soon is crucial for maintaining your current treatment schedule.
Loose or Poor Fitting Headgear
If you have headgear that isn’t fitting properly or causing discomfort let us know. We can carefully go over proper instructions for use, and make sure you’re doing so properly. If so, then we can adjust them for a more comfortable fit. The same goes for prolonged discomfort as a result of braces or aligners. Initial discomfort is normal as your smile adjusts, but discomfort lasting for more than a day or two could be a sign of trouble. If you have any questions about orthodontic emergencies, or if you find your self faced with one, then please let us know as soon as possible. We can schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience and help restore your smile (and repair your braces or aligners).
