Do You Need Braces Or Invisalign®?

If you have crooked or crowded teeth and would like to obtain a straighter smile, you have a number of different options. In today’s blog, we would like to look at two very different options for correcting misalignment for adults and teens in Fort Worth, TX. If you have an uneven smile, should you try braces or Invisalign® aligners?

Braces

Braces can address more severe cases of misalignment. We begin by taking detailed digital images of your smile, which we use to plan your treatment. We attach brackets to the front facing sides of the teeth and then connect them with an arch wire. When you come to the office for periodic visits, we will adjust the tension in the wire to begin repositioning the teeth. The amount of time you will need to wear them will vary depending on your age and the extent of your misalignment. On average, people need to wear braces for about two years. In order to make them less visible and help improve smile esthetics during the treatment process, we often create the brackets with ceramic instead of metal. Ceramic is a strong material that can be shaded to match the color of a tooth, which means your metal orthodontics will be less noticeable. Teens and adults alike can benefit from cosmetic brackets.

Clear Invisalign® Aligners

For minor and more serious cases of misalignment, our team may suggest the Invisalign® system. Unlike metal orthodontics, there are no metal brackets and wires. Instead, we take images of the smile with iTero® digital technology, which enables us to create a 3D model and design a series of aligners from a BPA-free acrylic material. The aligners will fit comfortably and correct the teeth over the course of about a year to 18 months. Patients move from one set to another about once every two weeks, as the teeth are gently repositioned. Many people prefer these because they are much less noticeable and because the treatment time is shorter. They can also be removed before meals, or prior to brushing and flossing the teeth. In order to decide which is better for your smile, braces or aligners, we will need to take detailed digital impressions and assess the cause and extent of your misalignment. If you have questions about either option, then please contact our team today to schedule a consultation.
