Just because your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist recommends braces, doesn’t mean you’re going to receive metal braces that stand out. For our teen and adult patients, we may instead use tooth-colored brackets to help minimize the appearance of braces throughout the treatment process. How do we create and place these custom orthodontic brackets?
How Do Braces Correct Smiles?
Braces help address both minor and severe cases of misalignment. We begin by carefully examining your smile and taking detailed digital images of your teeth and gums. We use the images to create a 3D model of your smile and plan your treatment, even creating images of what your smile may look like post-treatment. A series of brackets will be attached to the front facing sides of the teeth, and connected with a thin arch wire. During periodic visits, the orthodontist will adjust the tension in the arch wire to begin moving the teeth and correcting misalignment. Total treatment times will depend on the extent of the misalignment, but may take between 18 months and 2 years.
Typically, the brackets we attach to the teeth are created from metal, meaning they stand out against your teeth. However, the help minimize the appearance of your orthodontics, we will create them from ceramic. The same material is often used to create lifelike crowns, inlays, onlays and other restorations. Ceramic contains stain-resistant properties and can be shaded to match the color of the teeth. In the restoration form, the material can absorb serious bite forces. Our team will design and craft brackets to blend with your smile seamlessly. For our teen and adult patients, this helps limit the appearance of your orthodontics throughout the treatment process!
The Benefits of Treatment
Did you know that correcting misalignment often helps reduce the risk of tooth decay and gum disease? Misalignment can provide places for food particles to become trapped, places you may not reach when you brush and floss. Over time, bacteria break down these particles and the health of your smile suffers. In addition, poor alignment has been shown to put inordinate strain on the jaw joints, leading to an increased risk of TMJ disorder and bruxism (chronic teeth grinding). By treating your poor alignment, we can help you enjoy optimal oral health and more attractive smiles for many years to come.
