However, what do you do in the event your braces or aligners break? In today’s blog, your Fort Worth, TX, orthodontist will discuss how to respond to common orthodontic emergencies.
Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontic Emergencies
Question: What if a wire becomes broken or loose?
Answer: A loose wire or one that pokes out from your braces could lead to serious discomfort. First, use a pencil eraser to try and carefully push the wire back down. If this fails to address the issue, then coat the area in wax to prevent injury and discomfort, and see us right away. We can trim and reposition the wire to prevent further pain.
Question: What if my aligners crack?
Answer: If your aligners crack, then let us know right away. We can create a replacement so you can continue treatment and not fall behind due to a compromised aligner. If the aligner causes discomfort, then place wax on the area that rubs against your gums to ease discomfort until your smile adjusts.
Question: My braces bands broke, now what?
Answer: If a band becomes loose, but remains on the wire, then use wax to hold it in place until you can see us to repair your braces. However, if the band comes loose completely and separates from the braces, wrap it in a tissue or place it in a small container and bring it with you to the office, so we can correct the problem and allow you to resume treatment.
Question: What if my mouth hurts?
Answer: When we first place braces, or following an adjustment, discomfort is normal. You may notice a little soreness when you at as well. Your smile will adjust, but in the meantime try rinsing your mouth with warm salt water and take a pain reliever. We may also show you how to use wax to ease discomfort through the adjustment process. Don’t ignore any discomfort or damage to your orthodontics, please let us know so we can make sure you continue to enjoy quality treatment and a positive experience.
