We focused on children’s orthodontic care in the last blog, but today we would like to talk about our teenaged patients in particular. When children enter their teenage years, they’re smiles are grown and developed enough to begin serious orthodontic treatment to correct uneven smiles and improve oral health. In today’s blog, we’re looking at the cosmetic treatment options we have for young patients in Fort Worth, TX.
The Benefits of Treating Misalignment
In their teen years, our patients’ smiles are not undergoing the massive shifts and changes as they do in childhood, but at the same time they are still growing, which makes this the perfect time to begin serious orthodontic treatment. Correcting uneven smiles helps improve the effectiveness of brushing and flossing, reducing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Correcting the position of your teeth also relieves pressure on the jaw joints, which helps protect patients from TMJ disorder and bruxism. These jaw joint disorders may cause damaged teeth, an increased risk of tooth decay and infection, and lead to painful headaches and jaw discomfort. Correcting misalignment also restores bite balance and improves the beauty of the smile as well.
If your child requires braces to correct the smile, then we can take steps to limit the appearance of metal braces. For example, instead of placing metal brackets onto the front facing side of the teeth, we can create them from ceramic. Not only is ceramic strong and durable, but the material is metal-free and can be shaded to match the color of surrounding tooth structure. With their placement, only the thin metal arch wire is visible, which helps ensure the braces are less noticeable. Each bracket will be custom-made using digital technology and color matched to the individual’s smile.
We also have an option that doesn’t employ metal at all. Instead, we use digital iTero® scanning to create a detailed 3D impression of the smile, which we employ to design and create a series of aligners from a BPA-free and clear acrylic material. Each set is worn for between 20 and 23 hours a day, and a new set is worn every two weeks. Over the course of a year to 18 months, teens can enjoy straighter smiles.
