Who Qualifies For Invisalign®?

Invisalign® doesn’t use metal brackets and wires to correct misalignment. Instead, we employ a series of clear acrylic aligners to improve misalignment and offer a healthier, more attractive smile. But who qualifies for these aligners? When do we recommend them for patients in Fort Worth, TX?

How Does Invisalign® Improve Smile Alignment?

With braces, tension is used to move the teeth into optimal positions. Metal brackets will be attached to the front facing sides of the teeth and connected with an arch wire. When tension in the wire is adjusted, the teeth move. However, we have an alternative that doesn’t require metal brackets or wires. Instead, we take a series of digital impressions of your teeth, which will be used to create a custom series of aligners from a clear acrylic material. The patient wears a set for about two weeks, 20 to 23 hours a day. After two weeks, the patient moves on to the next set. The amount of time treatment takes will vary, but is typically within a year for adults and up to 18 months for teens.

Qualifications for Clear Aligners

We first need to look at your alignment. We carefully examine your smile using iTero® digital scanning and I-CAT computerized tomography, which offers an incredibly detailed look at your smile. Once we pinpoint the cause and extent of your misalignment, we can decide if you benefit from clear aligners. Treatment is typically offered to teens and adults. If we feel you do require traditional braces, then we can discuss ceramic brackets to reduce the appearance of your braces significantly.

The Benefits of Clear Braces

First, when worn they are practically invisible, which means they don’t impact your professional appearance in a negative fashion. They fit comfortably and help you avoid gum and cheek irritation. You can remove them before meals, so you don’t need to alter your diet or worry about food becoming trapped in your orthodontics. Removing them also makes brushing and flossing easier. As long as you wear them as prescribed, you can take them out for special occasions as well, such as dates, job interviews, or graduation. Treatment time is often less than the amount needed for metal braces, and you will require fewer office visits.
